Breast enlargement is performed by the placement of saline-filled implants either under your breast tissue or both the chest muscle and breast tissue through incisions either above the breast crease, around the nipple or through the armpit. Discomfort from surgery will last no more than one week and usually subsides sooner.
Recent studies have shown little difference in breast shape whether round or so-called "anatomical" teardrop-shaped implants are used. Natural breast shape is the result of proper implant placement and the avoidance of capsular contracture, which results from shrinkage of the scar membrane that will form around the implant.
With regard to implant size, I tell my patients there is really no right or wrong answer. It all depends upon what image they hope to obtain. To that end, all of my patients undergo a sizing prior to surgery, which involves placement of a wide range of sizers in a bra the patient is wearing and wishes to fill. With use of a full-length mirror, the desired contour becomes evident and the patient makes the choice. I do not limit my patients to any particular size of implants as I have created very natural breasts using large implants.
A common misconception about breast enlargement is that a patient can have any breast shape she desires. Breast implants fill the skin brassiere or envelope, which the patient naturally possesses. Enlargement will modify the shape and can reduce the amount of sagging to some degree but major corrections in either breast shape or droop can only be accomplished through a mastopexy or "breast lift".
