Liposuction (or suction-assisted lipectomy) has become one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today. Proven safe with minimal scarring and outstanding results, it is the preferred method for removing fat from the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and knees, as well as areas of the face, neck and arms. Liposuction is not an alternative to weight reduction but can be very effective in removing fat from areas that do not respond to diet and exercise programs.
Over the past two decades, the procedure has evolved from the original technique of using relatively wide cannulas without pretreatment of the fat (dry technique). My liposuction technique now includes the following:
- Tumescent Technique - This involves the infiltration of sterile fluid into the treatment areas containing medications to minimize bleeding and provide anesthesia.
- External Ultrasound - The application of ultrasound after the fat has been infiltrated results in a softening of the fat, facilitating its removal with the suction cannulas.
- Superficial & Deep Liposuction With Narrow Cannulas - The use of narrow cannulas allows for the removal of fat not only from the deep fat compartments but also from the superficial layers beneath the skin. The added benefit of superficial liposuction is that the resulting wound contracture helps tighten loose skin smoothing its contour.
After the procedure, a compression garment covering all treated areas is worn for approximately one month after surgery to reduce swelling and improve body contour. Pain is minimal and bruising and swelling resolve a few weeks after surgery.
